Memorandums of Understanding (MOUs)

We extended the Extra Shift MOU through 9/10/22, but there has been a change to the language that will start 4/23/22.

“If a nurse who is working an extra shift is low censused during their extra shift, that nurse will receive the Extra Shift Bonus for the actual hours worked, prior to low census, rounded to the nearest bonus shift increment.”

This means that your bonus is prorated if you are sent home early on LC during your extra shift.

Your officers and unit reps debated this change at length. Please know that we heard your voices and we agreed, so we asked administration to keep the language the same. Unfortunately, they would not budge. We understand this is disappointing; here are a few rationales to provide you with some transparency about the decision:

  • First and foremost, we don't want to take extra wages away from nurses in the membership who want the opportunity, or need it to help make ends meet.

  • Secondly, MOU communications are not negotiations. The membership can provide feedback and express opinions to administration, but admin is not obligated to make changes based on our criticisms. We are not bargaining with administration for these MOUs and their language, and they could walk away from the extra shift MOU entirely, if they so choose.

  • As we enter trauma season and prime-time vacation, our hope is that LC on your extra shifts will not occur very frequently.

  • Some members expressed a desire for a vote with this decision. Again, MOUs aren't negotiations. Additionally, your officers and reps felt like this matter was necessarily large enough to spend the time and energy trying to engage the membership for a vote. We don't feel like this is our "hill to die on," so to speak. We'd like to continue to spend energy on working towards more livable wages, etc. However, we do understand the importance of involving the membership with larger asks and decisions, and will continue to work on inclusion.

As a reminder, the shift extension MOU is the same and has also been extended through 9/10/22, along with the temporary noc shift incentive.

As always, please reach out to your officers or your unit reps (here is a list) with your concerns, comments, or questions. We are here for you and we are eager for your feedback.

In solidarity,

Leslie, Rachel, Jeff, Casey, Tyler, and Alyshia
